I’ve mentioned this before, but it can be really irritating to look up from the Loop and see Trump stamped on that skyscraper right across the Chicago river. It’s always been ugly, but even more so now that this name has become a campaigning symbol for bullshit, for hate, for fear, xenophobia, racism and so much else of the ugly strain on society that politics can provide. I’m not much of a fan of Hillary either, but Trump is significantly worse, especially (I would imagine) for a group of Muslim men and women who have to look up, same as we all do to this craven stain in the sky…

Have a nice day.

A Saturday afternoon in Chinatown…one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city, one I’d love to actually live in but won’t. Like most cities, gentrification has taken hold in many parts of Chicago and I really don’t want to be a part of it, or at least I want to minimize my role as much as possible. So how do I do that? One way is on the occasions I visit neighborhoods like Humboldt Park, Pilsen and Logan Square I try to spend money in the more traditional, local businesses while staying the hell out of their newer blight: craft breweries, artisanal coffee shops and beard waxing salons.

And speaking of traditional, how long has this man been selling cotton candy in the area around Chinatown?

Most of my adult life, year after year.

Have a nice day,

Due to an unfortunate leg injury, I’ve been unable to be out shooting pictures in my normal style of wandering the Loop. New tactics dictated by new pain – and rather than the wandering, instead I’ve had to find locations that interest me and then wait to see what comes my way. This was yesterday morning, sitting and watching when I struck up a conversation with this gentleman who then stood, profile against this advertisement on another side of another building. I looked at what I was seeing for a few minutes and then asked if I could take his picture. He agreed, facing me but I asked if he would stand back at profile.

He smiled and agreed.

This is the result…have a nice day.

The Loop in Chicago, some days of shooting are good, some bad. This day in particular I’d been wandering around for the better part of two hours and taken a hundred photos of shit. Frustrated, I headed for the blue line train to go home and stumbled onto this image. I wasn’t sure at the time how it was going to turn out but I think it came through okay, all of it reminding me of several essays I’d read about street photography…it only takes one shot to make the day worthwhile and you better be ready when it comes.

Have a nice day.

This photograph was taken around the base of the small plaza at the Sears Tower. Yes, I know it’s now called the Willis Tower but really, who calls it that beyond tourists and transplants. It was another very cold day in Chicago, the kind of day that had me thinking about the next time I’d be in New Orleans.

Have a nice day.
