Feinberg’s adjustment like a backhanded compliment…

Feinberg’s helping again… He took a look at the poor harvest this season of shrimp and crab from the Gulf of Mexico and decided something needed to be done, that more compensation was necessary as the damages from this oil spill were greater than he had originally estimated… And he was right in this assessment, and to fix it he will increase the compensation rates for shrimpers and … Continue reading Feinberg’s adjustment like a backhanded compliment…

State says eyeless shrimp are good eating…

Two competing articles published a day apart have a very different take on the safety of Gulf Seafood… In the first, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries report that not one bit, smidgen or iota of toxic chemicals has ever been found in Gulf Seafood and therefore the seafood is safe to eat, while in the second article, though first quoting the FDA’s website which … Continue reading State says eyeless shrimp are good eating…

Denied: Feinberg must face Mississippi court

Jim Hood, Mississippi Attorney General, has finally prevailed over Ken Feinberg. It was back in February when Hood filed a subpoena against Ken and the GCCF, requesting to see the records of claimants who had given their permission for such a review, and it was a subpoena Feinberg at first ignored, then denied and fought, arguing its validity should be heard in court, but not in a Mississippi courtroom, it should … Continue reading Denied: Feinberg must face Mississippi court

Feinberg testifies in DC, but shrimpers skeptical…

Feinberg testified thursday at a hearing before the House Committee on Natural Resources that new rules will be created to make payouts more generous for the Gulf Coast shrimpers suffering through this, and possibly future terrible seasons. “I think we’ve got to do better for the shrimpers,” Feinberg said. It was a rare concession from Feinberg, that perhaps things aren’t going as swimmingly in the Gulf as the GCCF … Continue reading Feinberg testifies in DC, but shrimpers skeptical…

Judge Barbier denies BP appeal…

Back in August, US District Court Judge Carl Barbier issued a ruling allowing for claimants in the B1 Bundle to sue British Petroleum for punitive damages, a ruling BP appealed. “I have given this a lot of thought,” Barbier said about BP’s appeal at the end of last week… Denied. The B1 bundle includes all claims for private or “nongovernmental economic loss and property damages…” … Continue reading Judge Barbier denies BP appeal…

Feinberg back in Jefferson Parish…

On Wednesday, Ken Feinberg attended a meeting in Jefferson Parish where local fishermen, oystermen, shrimpers and crabbers weren’t as celebratory of his efforts with the GCCF as the law students were when he recently spoke in Ireland. Harlon Pearce, owner of LA Fish & Seafood asked, “How do we go out and market this product, when we’re worried about having a product to market?” This is becoming … Continue reading Feinberg back in Jefferson Parish…

Ken’s world tour – next stop, Dublin…

Ken Feinberg recently visited Dublin as part of the US-Ireland Alliance where he gave a talk to Trinity College law students, and then an interview to the Irish Times. During both engagements, he spoke of the cottage industry he has established as a mediator for a variety of compensation funds, including his role with the GCCF. When discussing his role in the Gulf, Ken said, … Continue reading Ken’s world tour – next stop, Dublin…

British Petroleum: (still) encouraging the responsibility of others…

Bob Dudley announced Monday that British Petroleum had come to terms with Anadarko, which has agreed to give up its 25% stake in the Macondo Well and pay British Petroleum $4 billion dollars as its share of damage claims and cleanup costs. “I am very pleased that they stepped in and are now shouldering some of the responsibilities,” BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley said. He … Continue reading British Petroleum: (still) encouraging the responsibility of others…

More agendas than shrimp in the Gulf…

It’s got to be hard to be a shrimper. I know I certainly don’t envy anyone who makes their living by what they catch from Gulf waters, be they shrimpers or fishers or whoever, because things don’t seem to be getting much better. The catch, especially the shrimp catch is way off, with some shrimpers estimating their catch to be off by 80%. In one article I read, a … Continue reading More agendas than shrimp in the Gulf…

BP and VoO: Working for free to protect the environment – it’s a start…

Have you seen the commercials British Petroleum will still occasionally run that purports their efforts to be environmentally friendly? Yep, they were/are a friend to the environment, ready to invest all that money in alternative energy, ready to go Beyond Petroleum They even had a tag-line, “BP: It’s a start.” Yeah…but it was of course (as are all things BP) about money: “Investors choose whose … Continue reading BP and VoO: Working for free to protect the environment – it’s a start…

By putting ourselves below everyone, we're building in a defense mechanism. Protecting against real engagement. By imagining that no one wants us, that all others are so different from us, we're privileging our own point of view.

The people in power will not disappear voluntarily, giving flowers to the cops just isn't going to work. This thinking is fostered by the establishment; they like nothing better than love and nonviolence. The only way I like to see cops given flowers is in a flowerpot from a high window.

The surest way to work up a crusade in favor of some good cause is to promise people they will have the chance of maltreating someone. To be able to destroy with good conscience, to be able to behave badly and call your bad behavior 'righteous indignation' - this is the height of psychological luxury, the most delicious of moral treats.
